The topnotcher of the June 2013 Nurse Licensure Examination on Tuesday shared her secrets on getting a rating of 87%.

Beverly Anne Felicio Balagon, a graduate of Velez College in Cebu City, said she really hoped and prayed that she would top the exam.

“Part sa prayer na sana pumasa and I think everyone else may konting wish na mag-top din sa boards. Everyone wants to excel din naman so ako rin, I was hoping but not expecting,” Balagon said in an interview with radio dzMM Tuesday afternoon.

The 20-year-old nursing graduate said that like her, the examinees should not doubt themselves.

“Tanggalin ‘yung doubts. First, i-identify kung saan galing ‘yung doubts mo then keep yourself at peace,” she said.

She added that when reviewing, examinees should also prepare themselves holistically and balance their time well. They should still have time to relax and go out with family and friends.

“May mga naririnig ako na overnight nag-aaral. Ako bahala kayo, basta ako matutulog ako minimum 5 hours,” she said.

Balagon, who did not graduate on top of her class, said her parents were very happy when the results came out.

She said the last time a graduate from Velez College was able to top the nursing exam was 1993.

“Mas masaya pa sila kaysa sa akin,” she said of her parents.

Why nursing

Balagon shared that upon graduation from high school, she initially could not decide what course to take in college. “Parang maraming gusto, maraming pumapasok masyado sa isip ko.”

She said it was her mother, a research dermatologist, who encouraged her to take nursing. Her father is an engineer.

“Eventually nagustuhan ko rin naman at saka natapos ko rin,” she said.

Balagon admitted, however, that she is still unsure of what career she would pursue now.

She said she still has to weigh in all her options: be a bedside nurse, proceed to medicine or law, pursue a career in medico-legal, or be involved in a health-related business.

But she said that her “dream hospital” is St. Luke’s Medical Center. “Nakikita ko sa TV eh,” she said.

Balagon also said as of now, she is not that keen on being deployed in a poor community.

“‘Yung idea po na tutulong ka sa kanila, opo, kasi it’s giving back to the people. Pero ewan ko kung kakayanin ko,” she said.
